OLD and RARE 'HEART' BOWL - HEALING QUALITY (#OTB102)
MALE TONE - Eb (-5Hz) FEMALE TONE - g (+9Hz)
Size: 15cm/7"

This unusual bowl was traded in Pokhara, Nepal - home to many Tibetan traders. It is shaped in the thadobati style but with a more rounded shape. It features some unusual markings - the double line around the top edge of the bowl is now quite worn indicating an age of 200 years or more. The double line around the middle of the bowl is clearer. There are some enigmatic markings on the bowl - one set seems to form the shape of of the infinity symbol - but the meaning of this is in a Himalayan context is unclear and these could have been ownership markings. The inside centre of the bowl features markings used consistently over centuries of Himalayan bowl production - a small circle inside two larger concentric circles and these within two larger concentric circles yet again, like the ripples of a stone thrown in a lake.

The wall of this bowl is slightly thinner than usual giving a deep focussed note with balanced harmonics. The worn edges allow the bowl to sing easily and the bowl fits in the hand comfortably without being too heavy. The size, weight and shape of this bowl make it ideal for placing on the body close to the heart chakra.

This beautifully shaped bowl is in the thadobati syle. The pattern surrounding the edge of the bowl consists of a dot within a circle repeated over a double and single line. The dot within a circle ideogram been used in most cultures throughout history. While generally referring to the sun, Hindus call the dot 'bindu' - the life force within the cosmic womb, the balance of male and female energies. In the inside centre of the bowl the dot within a circle is magnified to a circle within a larger circle.

There are also downward triangular formations at the four quadrants of the bowl. In the Buddhist Tantric tradition this shape represents the origin of all things and in Hindu tradition refers to the feminine principle. When a bowl is struck, it vibrates with equal strength at the four quadrants relative to the first stroke. The size, weight and shape of this bowl make it ideal for placing on the body close to the heart chakra.
