MICHAEL ASKILL

..has had a life-long fascination with sound and in particular, gongs and singing bowls. He was introduced to the sonic possibilities of these instruments through performing the music of composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Toru Takemitsu, Ross Edwards, Peter Sculthorpe and Karlheinz Stockhausen. It was his interest in Asian percussion instruments, contemporary music and the writings of the American composer John Cage that led him to explore Zen Buddhism and later, Tibetan Buddhism.

His life as a musician and his interests in Buddhism converged when he was invited to be the Musical Director for a concert for HH Dalai Lama at the Sydney Opera House IN 2002. Inspired by his meeting with HH Dalai Lama he went on to create '...in the between' - Meditations and Illuminations on the Tibetan Book of the Dead - a piece still being performed throughout Australia with Tenzin Choegyal, Riley Lee and James Coates.

Michael Askill decided to share his fascination with the sounds of singing bowls and gongs with others and now sources the finest singing bowls and gongs for musicians, healers and anyone who is interested in exploring the potential of these ancient and beautiful instruments. He uses these instruments in his musical practice and continues to research and explore their potential with group close-encounters and in private practice. NEW ARRIVALS
Himalayan Singing Bowls

New hand-made, hand-hammered singing bowls direct from our workshop in Nepal – these bowls continue the line of the Himalaya’s finest singing bowls and contain recycled formula from old, cracked bowls. Bowl weights range from 600 grams to 3 kilos with diameters from 12cm – 40cms.

Engraved Himalayan Singing Bowls

There are a limited number of singing bowls engraved in Tibetan script with the six syllable mantra: Om Mani Padme Hum - HH Dalai Lama says of this mantra: "Thus the six syllables, ,Om Mani Padme Hum, mean that in dependence on the practice which is in indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha."

Tibetan Tingsha

Beautiful sounding pairs of cymbals with matching silk brocade covers – in plain and dragon styles. While some people believe these bells need to be ‘harmonically matched’ or precisely ‘in-tune’ with one another – it is the slight discrepancy in tuning between each bell that creates the slow pulsing detected by the brain, allowing the mind to slow down into a meditative state.

Tibetan Bell and Dorje
Bells and dorjes are used in many Tibetan Buddhist rituals. The bell symbolizes the feminine principle, the wisdom of emptiness, while the dorje, or vajra, symbolizes the masculine principle, that of compassion expressed through skillful means. The union of these two principles is enlightened mind.
We have sets in small, medium and large sizes with matching silk brocade covers.

Gongs
A new shipment of gongs and cymbals has arrived featuring a range of symphonic gongs (Chao), wind gongs (Feng) and many others ranging in sizes from 50-120cms in diameter! From hand held gongs through to large gongs and profound waves of oceanic sound. We continue to stock a selection of hand picked old & antique singing bowls in all sizes.
